What do you think of the role of culture in climate change / moving towards an ecological age?
It is crucial. Art is a dynamic medium to communicate serious socio-political / environmental issues and is most effective for mass media communication, education, stimulation of debate etc.
Who are your favourite artists/ filmmakers / other cultural 'actors'. Add links if possible
reviews of African artists on my blog: www.ireallyloveafrica.tumblr.com
What is your biggest concern re. climate change?
Climate change's impact on development of climate-dependent activities (such as infrastructure and agriculture) and indirect consequences for social systems (such as issues of poverty, conflict, health and education). As a result, climate change has the potential to undermine, and even undo, socio-economic development in Africa for instance.
Am interested in research on the the effect it has on migrating communities in Africa. Am interested in Human rights: Protecting people and the environment.
What is your biggest inspiration re. climate change?
Wangari Maathai, Kenyan environmental and political activist who proved the power of one and created incredible eco-awareness and environmental change. The inspiring recycling activities in poor communities like Khayelitsha and the abundant organic gardens.
What do you think you can do to help prevent / minimise climate change?
communicate through my arts projects, media, columns, blogs, creative writing, poetry, arts festivals, effective networking, eating a sustainable non-meat diet, being a cyclist, growing own vegetables, planting a tree every birthday...
